After considering several options: layover time, transit airport, total cost, departure/arrival time etc, I ended up buying JFK<->DEL via Istanbul (Turkey), with total travel time ~ 20 hours to KTM, and couple more upon return, which isn't all that bad.
Now, if you purchase separate tickets (thru different carrier/agency), you don't get the luggage tag marking the final destination, afaik. But, do you necessarily need to go thru immigration and make a U-turn with the luggage, given that you're holding another ticket for a flight leaving shortly? Has anyone had experience along that line in the past?
When I transited last time in Delhi, the wait time was ~15 hours, and I had separate ticket for DEL->KTM segment. I went past the immigration and returned the following morning to catch the KTM bound flight. This time I really want to avoid the check-out/check-in, provided the short transit time, while ensuring that the luggage reaches the final destination.

No you don't need to pass through immigration and make U-turn even though you buy your tickets from different agencies or airlines. Just be careful not to cross the immigration line when you are in Delhi airport. Find the tranist desk, tell them about your connecting flight, give them your baggage tag number and they will take care of your baggage. You need to identify your baggage within transit area before you board the flight though.

I am also goint to Nepal via New Delhi. I have a flight from Chicago to New Delhi from American Airlines and from New Delhi to Ktm from Jet Airways. I have overnight transit at Delhi Airport. To whom do I need to contact at the transit and tell them about my connecting flight and my baggage tag number. Do I need to contact Jet Airways representative or American Airlines representative? Do they have Airlines counter inside the transit area? Do they handle the issue even though it is 12 hrs before my departure flight? Will I be able to check in my baggage to Ktm from here? How do I identify my baggage? Will they bring our luggage in the transit area even though we checked in our baggage to ktm. Waiting for ur reponse...

chautaribhanjhyang, after you register yourself at transit desk, people from Jet Airways will contact you in transit area. The system actually works!

terrypandi, that was some helpful info. Thank you!
@chautaribhanjyang, if you have 12 hours of layover time, then even if you exit out through immigration (in the worst case), you'll still have more than enough time to get some fresh air, visit Chandi Chowk , grab a hotel, or stay inside the waiting area/lounge across the street, and re-check-in the following morning. You should be good either way, When are you heading to Ktm?
